Suyian has operated as a commercial livestock operation since the early 1900s. However, livestock practices have undergone significant evolution over the last century in Laikipia, and are now guided by science and technology. When managed sustainably, livestock rangelands can help sequester carbon, support ecological biodiversity, and contribute to sustainable economic development.
Suyian employs a holistic and regenerative management approach to ensure the rangeland remains in optimal condition, promoting the thriving of wildlife while generating income through cattle sales. This income is then reinvested back into the conservation of the Conservancy.
Currently, the ranch is home to 3,000 head of Boran cattle that are raised for beef. Suyian is a proud member of Agwild, a beef cooperative with conservation at its core. We take great pride in being one of Laikipia’s top beef producers. We minimise predator-incidents by placing our livestock in predator-proof bomas at night.
Our holistic grazing plan ensures that 90% of the conservancy remains cattle-free, allowing pastures to naturally regenerate. Through holistic management, cattle reduce moribund grass biomass, facilitate seed dispersal, increase the nutritional value of grass, and lower the risk of bushfires. This benefits the plains game, such as zebra, white rhino, and impala, which are naturally drawn to areas regularly grazed by livestock. With the presence of plains game, predators also thrive, contributing to a balanced ecosystem.
Rangeland Management Courses:
Suyian hosts rangeland management courses that anyone can attend. These courses are run by Suyian Soul (a conservation initiative run by Anne Powys) and provide a great opportunity to showcase responsible rangeland management to local communities.
